WHOA, I’ve been listening to J Dilla’s The Shining Instrumentals for years, and just discovered that it was posthumously finished with vocals. It’s kind of weird to have been so familiar with the instrumentals and only now discover that they were intended to be rapped over. Dilla basically invented the contemporary “brainfeeder beatmaker” genre by getting too sick to finish an album, and being on his death bed while making Donuts. These works created an ongoing legacy that will affect the future of music. There’s something very (Homerically) epic about that.
